September-October 2010

This is a combined issue of our newsletter. September and October will be one edition this year. Because our secretary will be on medical leave when the October issue should be published, we are printing this letter for two months.

Our Fall schedule is around the corner. In September this is what will change:

...Ladies Society will begin again at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 2nd

...Confirmation begins with a parent/student meeting on Sept. 8th at 6:00 p.m.

...Sunday school starts on Sept. 12th at 10:15 a.m.

...Saturday services resume at 6:00 p.m. on Sept. 11th

New this Fall will be…

Our Redeemer Travelers which arranges trips to various points of interest. Our first trip is to Camp Luther in Three Lakes, WI on September 23rd. The cost will be $37 which includes transportation and lunch and programming at the Camp. Camp Luther is a treasure of the North Wisconsin District. We will be traveling hopefully in the peak of Autumn colors. See Pastor, Fern Boetcher, or Louise Putzier to sign up or for more information.
The goal for Our Redeemer Travelers is to offer day trips of interest to members, and those outside of our congregation at or near the cost of the trip.
Christian Education is primarily a parental responsibility. Many passages in the Bible point to duties of congregations and pastors, and many are directed to parents. To parents is laid the heavy and important responsibility for Christian Education. Over many generations the task has drifted from parents to the church, and its Sunday school and Confirmation instruction. Frankly, it places the church in a role that we were never intended to perform, and we are not doing very well at it. Parents, need the church to help, but not take primary responsibility.  Praying in the home with children strengthens the family, and impresses on children the importance of God and spiritual life. I have been impressed in my ministry by bed ridden elderly, who prayed with me the Lord’s Prayer, and then add the children’s bed time prayer, “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.” Where did he learn it? The Church? No! This gentleman learned it in the home in practice and not in the church or Sunday School.
Parents, if you want well grounded children in the Christian faith, then you will have to take charge and make your home a place of Christian teaching, prayer, and example. We will be here to help. But, you are in charge, and responsible to God himself for the spiritual life of your children. “Teach a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
Blessings on your Autumn,
Pastor Kangas

If you have Thrivent Life insurance, disability insurance or annuities, you may designate "Choice Dollars" to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church or other registered charity of your choice. Watch for a letter coming to your home soon from Thrivent about "Choice Dollars". Our Redeemer now has an account open through Thrivent, so that members can go online or contact their representative to direct dollars to their own congregation. Most Thrivent Financial members will be able to direct about $25-$500 a year. Please take the time to designate your Thrivent Choice dollars to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

We intend to arrive back at Our Redeemer at 7:00 p.m. The cost will be $37 and any one can come. Experience the Fall color and the beauty of Camp Luther. The New Piano is Here!

As many of you know, last spring we started a campaign to riase funds to replace the aging baby grand in the balcony. Our goal was to raise nearly $14,000 for a reconditioned Yamaha grand piano. Last wekk, Neff's Piano Shop acquired a Kawai grand piano (comparable to a Yamaha) from a private home. The asking price was roughly $11,000, but he was able to give they piano to us for $8500. Because there was enough money in the piano fund to pay for thepiano, the new piano arrived on Monday, but we will still need to raise funds for the humidifier (approximately $280) and piano cover (approximately $365) so that we can protect our investment. The old baby grand is available to a good home at no charge. All we ask is that the new owners be responsible for moving it and perhaps make a donation toward the cost of the humidifier and piano cover. We thank you and praise God for this good fortune and for blessing our ministry so richly, and we are grateful to those of you who have supported (and will continue to support) this project.

Confirmation Begins

Confirmation begins on September 8 with a student parent meeting at 6:00 p.m. If you are aware of a young person hwo should be a part of our confirmation ministry, please contact the church office and Pastor Kangas.

Children Needed for Singing

Calling all kids who want to sing one VBS song for church!! On Sunday, September 12, all children who want to sing at the opening of church should meet me in the choir warm-up room at 8:40 a.m. We will run through the piece and head to the front of the sanctuary to sing. September 12 is also Rally Sunday, the first day of CEH, so singing in church will be a great way to start out CEH right. Hope you can join us! If you have any questions, please call Jeanne Kolis at 715-830-0983.
